 School History

West Elementary School was constructed in 1950 to serve the needs of a growing town. East Elementary was the only public elementary school at this time. The needs for another school were apparent. West Elementary was built to meet those needs.
Since its beginning, West has been served by an array of seven different administrators. Mrs. Fronia Moore was the first administrator, serving the school twice as principal. She was followed by Mr. Felix Murrell, Mr. Richard Chapman, Mr. Raymond Clark, Mr. Terry Smith, Mr. Wayne Williams, and Dr. Elton Bouldin. Dr. Bouldin is currently serving as principal of the school.

West Elementary began with a staff of six or eight teachers. Today, there are forty-three educators employed (31 professionals + 12 support personnel). The school has always been staffed with dedicated, competent, and highly qualified personnel. Also, West has been known for its kind and caring teachers.

The philosophy of the school has always been to promote the dignity and self-worth of each individual child and to provide a quality education for all children.
In the early sixties, West Elementary blazed the trail in preparation for a self-study evaluation which would grant accreditation from Southern Association of Schools and Colleges. West passed with flying colors and was one of the first elementary schools in the state of Alabama to become accredited. How proud the entire community was!

West served as a pilot school for many innovated educational programs. At one time, West was a totally individualized school.  This allowed each student to progress and learn at his/her own rate of speed and level of ability.

Many exciting and challenging changes were taking place during this time. West was a fun place to be! The administrators and teachers have always been motivated and dedicated in keeping abreast of the changing times and needs of the children and community.

West Elementary has always served as a strong, thriving, and growing influence for educating the children of this community.

Mission Statement

The mission of the West Elementary Community is to establish a strong foundation for life-long learning that will enable all students to experience academic, physical, social, and emotional success.

West Elementary Creed

We believe that our school community is composed of individuals that possess qualities, which enhance the diverse character of our school.

We believe that our school community should prepare students to be productive and responsible members of society.

We believe that in addition to academic achievement the development of the total child should encompass social skills, emotional wellness, physical fitness and community awareness.

We believe that each child comes to our school with strengths and weaknesses.  Students are treated as individuals, with individual needs.  We focus on meeting those needs in a safe and nurturing environment.

We believe that students must have a firm foundation from which to build new knowledge.  This means integrating skills across content areas to help students add to their existing knowledge.

We believe that engaging students in authentic learning is essential.

We believe the role of a teacher is to provide instruction, guidance, encouragement, and discipline in a manner that is developmentally appropriate.

We believe learning has occurred when students apply their knowledge to other situations or use it as a building block to proceed to a higher level of learning.

We believe our school community, including students, parents, teachers, and community partners must display mutual respect and trust.

We believe parent and community involvement increases the motivation and achievement of students.

We believe that our school community must dedicate themselves to becoming life-long learners.

Believing this,

                  We will

                        Experience

                              Success

                                    Together!
