West Elementary celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday and the 50th birthday of "The Cat in the Hat" with some exciting events.  The LMC was home base for many of the activities.  Videos of Dr. Seuss favorites played for the students to enjoy.  Seuss fish were passed out to student who visited the LMC.  There was a "Guess how many green eggs are in the jar" contest and a GIANT Seuss cake!

West Elementary participated in Project 236 at 2:36 p.m.  Fifty years ago, Dr. Seuss was challenged to write a children's book with all the elements of good writing and use only 230 words.  The story had to have characters, a setting, a plot, conflict and resolution.  Dr. Seuss was able to meet this challenge using 236 words.  "The Cat and the Hat" was born!  The story remains a favorite of children and adults today.

So, in memory of Dr. Seuss and in honor of the 50th birthday of "The Cat in the Hat," Mrs. Drake, the LMS, read "The Cat in the Hat" to the entire school at 2:36 p.m.

The "What Did You Read Last Night?" component of our Celebrating Alabama's Authors campaign was an exciting part of the 2006 - 2007 school year. Take a look at the photos to see some of the things we read!

"All I've done is give you a book.  You have to have the courage to learn what's inside it"....from ROCKET BOYS

The Library Media Center (LMC) is a whirlwind of activity.  The LMC program is an integral part of the school's instructional program.  Reading comprehension strategies, information literacy skills and technology are areas of emphasis for the West Elementary LMC program.

During the 2006 - 2007 school year, a $1,000.00 donation was received from the West Elementary PTA.  This money will be used to improve both the fiction and non-fiction collections of the LMC.  Thank you so much, PTA for your continued support of the LMC.

Also, a grant was received from the Cullman City Schools Foundation for the purchase of a new World Book Encyclopedia set to support instruction.

A $300.00 Operation Round Up grant was recently awarded in order to update a long-time favorite of our students.....Nancy Drew Mysteries.

"Thank you!" to the West Elementary PTA, the Cullman Electric Cooperative and the Cullman City Schools Foundation. We (DO) Experience Success Together!
